Life is returning to normal for the owners and occupants of two local commercial buildings threatened with roof collapses due to the snow. One downtown building that did collapse needs major rebuilding, while the roof of the IRS complex in Andover faces weeks of snow removal.
In Lawrence, VIP Discount Auto Center at 90 Winthrop St. reopened Wednesday. Its roof collapsed Feb. 2 under the weight of an estimated 800,000 pounds of snow. About 30 workers and some customers heard noises coming from the ceiling so they evacuated and removed cars from the repair bays.
Building Inspector Greg Arvanitis on Wednesday approved it for occupation, although the roof will need major repairs.
"While the roof has suffered permanent damage, the business is allowed to reopen," Arvanitis said. The structural engineer, Sean Fennell of Fennell Engineering, Andover, wrote in his report to the city that there are nine roof trusses that have evidence of "permanent buckling."
Arvanitis said he would be working with VIP, whose corporate offices are in Lewiston, Maine, on a design to repair the roof. In the meantime, he said, "the owner has agreed to shovel off the roof after each and every snowfall for the remainder of winter." ... REad More
